Assignment#5: Polar Opposites

For my polar opposites assignment, I chose to do "On vs. Off." I chose to take a photo of a light when it was on, and once when it was off. I had planned to do a Day vs. Night photo, but it was hard to see the night photo and be able to tell what it was. Taking a picture of on and off is a perfect way to represent opposites. It is easy to see which is which and how they are different. The photo where the light is on only shows the light itself. The background turns black because of the focus on the light. The photo where the light is off, the background is able to be seen. The background adds the the effect that the light is off. You can see that there is a light source in the back of this photo that shows what it would look like if the light were on.

Many different ideas came to mind when I was told the assignment was “polar opposites.” For example, I wanted to do “Sunrise vs. Sunset.” I thought that would have been a creative thing to take pictures of. The only problem with that idea is that it would be hard to tell which was which. Sunrises and Sunset look a lot alike and it would get confusing. I also thought of doing “Black vs. White.” That idea was hard on it’s own. It was hard for me to figure out how to show both black and white without it looking like it was just a background that I found online. For me, choosing to do “On vs. Off” was easiest, and it looked the best. In the picture, it is easy to tell which is which. This is why I chose to do “On vs. Off” for my polar opposites assignment.
